Exterior project field guide

How to plan a covered patio or exterior carpentry project.

Begin with how the outdoor area or entry should function, then document grade, access, drainage, weather-exposed transitions, supports, doors, steps, railings, and connected surfaces.

Use & connections

Define the outdoor result and everything it touches.

Explain whether the project is intended for outdoor living, weather protection, safer access, a new entry sequence, repair, or several goals together. Then identify how it connects to the house and site.

Relevant conditions may include the current patio or yard, grade, drainage patterns, doors and windows, roof and wall transitions, supports, steps, landings, railings, nearby utilities, lighting, exterior finishes, landscaping, and the path materials and equipment would use to reach the work area.

  • Wide photos from the house toward the yard and back toward the house
  • Closer photos of transitions, damage, drainage paths, steps, and doors
  • Approximate dimensions and intended furniture or circulation needs
  • Known access, grade, boundary, utility, or maintenance constraints
  • Whether an attached or freestanding idea is being considered

Property readiness

Keep assumptions visible.

Exterior work has to respond to conditions that may not be obvious in a single photo. Treat property lines, easements, underground utilities, existing structure, drainage, soil, attachment points, and code requirements as items to confirm—not facts to guess.

Requirements differ by scope and municipality. Use the official links on the Northern New Jersey service-area page to find the relevant local department, then confirm which permit, zoning, inspection, design, or professional requirements apply to the actual project.

Listing a municipal resource does not indicate that a concept is approved or that one specific approval path applies.

First conversation

Bring the site, the intended use, and the open decisions.

Share the property ZIP code, current condition, intended use, approximate area, connected work, known constraints, and desired timing. If the project includes a patio, entry, doors, steps, railings, drainage concerns, repair, or exterior finishes, describe those elements together.

Review La Ferre’s covered patio and exterior carpentry service and actual exterior project photography. The next step should clarify what is known, what requires a property review, and what must be confirmed before the scope is treated as settled.
